On Tuesday morning, officers were called to the 7 Mini Mart on West Franklin Street to investigate reports of shots fired after the women were hit by the car.
Police say that after they were struck, Hagerstown resident John Michael Matthews-Hackett, 20, took out a handgun and fired a shot toward the driver of a Toyota Camry, which fled the scene while the shooter left the area on foot.
Matthews-Hackett missed the Toyota, but struck another vehicle in the area.
During the investigation, officials said that Matthews-Hackett was only next to the women by happenstance, and they were unknown to each other. The women had gotten into an altercation with the Camry driver moments earlier, prompting him to hit them with the bumper of the car.
Matthews-Hackett was simply standing near the women when they were struck.
Neither suffered injuries or required medical attention.
Matthews-Hackett was charged with:
- First- and second-degree attempted murder;
- First- and second-degree assault;
- Reckless endangerment;
- Multiple weapons violations.
The incident remains under investigation.
